In 2016, the Greater Peoria Baseball Coaches Association started a new tradition with “Player of the Game” Awards. These awards are presented to one player in the East vs West game, and one player in the North vs South game – and will be part of every game to come. Selected by the coaches, these awards are dedicated in honor of two founding members of the Coaches Association and the McDonald’s All-Star game.
The Bob Schlemmer award is presented to an East vs West player. Bob was the person who started the concept of this all-star game, led the first game in June of 1991, and kept it going for nearly two decades.
The Mike McDonald Award is presented to a North vs South player. Mike was an institution in the local baseball community and was still very active before his death in late 2015.
